This week I visited Rajalakshmi College of Engineering, one of the top colleges in Tamil Nadu, affiliated to Anna University, one of our key partners in India.
We are keen to support the educational development of young people who will bring the policies, discussed at Make in India this week, to fruition.
Indian students who join our diverse cohort in Edinburgh will be taught the latest concepts and skills in emerging technologies, which they can then bring back to support the growing Indian engineering industry.
This ties into our own agenda of attracting the best minds in the world to study at Edinburgh, ensuring that we can contribute to delivering global benefits.
The students I spoke to were impressed by our interdisciplinary teaching, and very keen to explore the work we carry out on contemporary issues at the boundaries of engineering, informatics and the environment.
It is no accident that we held this event in Chennai.
There are already several existing global energy partnerships between Edinburgh and institutions in Chennai, and we are already working together to build clean energy technologies that will power the growth in the Indian economy.
Chennai was a great experience and even more than that I was delighted to see a fantastic balance in the gender of our young engineers.
